President Trump Expands School Choice for Parents
WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to expand school choice freedoms and strengthen support for parents.
The order, titled “Expanding Educational Freedom and Opportunity for Families,” declares it is United States policy to “support parents in choosing and directing the upbringing and education of their children.”
The order is part of President Trump’s vision to “save American education,” and directs the respective Secretaries of Education, Defense, Labor, Interior, and Health and Human Services to make “education freedom a priority.” The order instructs these agencies to prioritize expanding “education freedom” when distributing federal grant money to K–12 schools and other educational choice opportunities.
Essentially, the order starts the federal government on a path to open up taxpayer funds for private and faith-based education. In addition, it directs the agencies to issue guidance to the states on how these funds can be used for low-income and working families, military families, and children eligible for the Bureau of Indian Education Schools to attend “the private, faith-based, or charter school” of their choice.
The order reads, “Parents want and deserve the best education for their children. But too many children do not thrive in their assigned, government-run K-12 school. According to this year’s National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 70 percent of 8th graders were below proficient in reading, and 72 percent were below proficient in math. Moreover, geographically based school assignments exacerbate the cost of housing in districts with preferred schools, straining the finances of millions of American families sacrificing for their children’s futures.”
The order stated that “universal” K-12 scholarship programs, which can be used across public, private, and faith-based schools, allow families – not the government – to choose the best education for their children.
President Trump gave these agencies between 60 to 90 days to review their respective discretionary grant programs and issue guidance to the states on how these funds are to be used to expand educational choice and support for families.
Covenant Journey Academy Founder and Chancellor Mat Staver said, “President Trump’s executive order is a welcomed policy shift that will soon empower parents with greater resources to choose the education their children deserve. Parental choice in education is the only solution to the broken government school system. Therefore, Covenant Journey Academy offers families a virtual homeschooling option that combines academic excellence, high-quality curriculum, and a solid biblical perspective with a structure that allows parents to take back control of their children’s education.”
