Florida Expands School Choice with Federal Tax Credits
ORLANDO, FL — Florida is once again leading the nation in education freedom. Governor Ron DeSantis announced that Florida will opt in to the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, expanding school choice opportunities for families across the state and reinforcing Florida’s commitment to parental empowerment in education.
Beginning January 1, 2027, Florida taxpayers may receive a tax credit of up to $1,700 per year for contributions that help K–12 students cover educational expenses. By opting into this federal program, Florida families will be able to supplement existing scholarships and further customize their children’s education to meet their unique needs.
Florida already boasts the nation’s largest and highest-ranked school choice program, with approximately 1.4 million students — nearly half of the state’s K–12 population — enrolled in private, charter, virtual, or homeschool education. The new tax credit builds on Florida’s universal school choice framework, enacted in 2023, which opened access to educational alternatives for every family in the state.
