Covenant Journey Academy Offers Six World Languages

ORLANDO, FL – Covenant Journey Academy (CJA) is pleased to announce six world language offerings, including Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Latin, and American Sign Language. CJA students can begin their study of Spanish as early as kindergarten and gain knowledge of Spanish-speaking cultures while they acquire world language skills, all taught with a biblical worldview by certified teachers. All of CJA’s world languages at the high school level include a focus on acquiring speaking, reading, and writing skills.

With almost 550 million Spanish speakers worldwide, CJA families who choose Spanish will not only get to learn to read, write, and speak Spanish, but they will also explore God’s great cultural diversity found among Spanish-speaking people groups around the world. Students can begin building their Spanish language skills as early as kindergarten and continue their journey all the way through the high school years. High school Spanish offerings include three full credits of Spanish: Spanish 1, Spanish 2, and Spanish 3 (Honors).

Mandarin Chinese can help CJA students get a jump on their future careers, as Chinese/English language speakers are in great demand in many professions. With 1.3 billion Mandarin Chinese speakers in the world, learning Mandarin can also open doors of evangelistic opportunities for CJA students as they master the language. Chinese 1, 2, and 3 (Honors) give CJA students 1.0 credit each. The course has been carefully aligned to national standards as set forth by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Latin is a classical language belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European languages. Latin is one of the Romance languages, which also include French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian. As CJA students progress through the study of Latin, their vocabulary improves as they recognize root words and their meanings. Learners get a better grasp of modern laws and culture by gaining an understanding of the Roman mind. This course also acquaints students with classical mythology and with the everyday life of the typical Roman and points out how that worldview contrasts with the Christian worldview. CJA offers Latin 1, 2, and 3 (Honors) for up to 3.0 credits.

CJA high schoolers can also master up to three full credits of American Sign Language as their world language requirement. ASL is the third most commonly used language in North America. ASL opens doors to the Deaf community, as students explore Deaf culture, education, and the arts as they learn to view the Deaf community as a people group with unique social beliefs, traditions, history, and values.

French and German are two other world languages offered to round out CJA high school students’ world language offerings. In French 1 and 2, native French speakers take students through daily scenarios and give them the necessary skills to read, write, and speak French. Students also study the cultures of France, Canada, and other French-speaking regions by learning about different geography, foods, celebrations, and traditions. In German 1 and 2, students are introduced to basic communication and comprehension skills in German. Assuming no prior knowledge of the German language, German 1 introduces the fundamentals of German grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. German 2 builds on these grammar and language skills, while exploring cultural themes regarding current events, famous German people, music, and famous festivals. High schoolers can earn up to two full credits each of French and German.
