Homeschool and Micro-School Models: A Ministry to Many

Homeschool and Micro-School Models: A Ministry to Many

ORLANDO, FL — Dr. Doug Richey, a former pastor and Missouri state representative, recently spoke out about church involvement in the school choice movement based on his unique experience spanning 26 years of ministry and six years in state politics. Speaking on EdChoice’s Sunday School Choice podcast, Richey argued that educational engagement represents a natural extension of Christianity’s historical commitment to learning and literacy.

During his legislative tenure, Richey observed significant problems within public education’s bureaucratic structure and encountered opposition from educational establishments that often disregarded input from parents. He criticized the “elitist expert mindset” in the system that assumes educators know better than parents about children’s needs.

Richey encourages churches to pursue different educational initiatives — like supporting homeschool co-ops and micro-schools or launching private schools — to challenge the status quo of public education. His own church successfully implemented such a hybrid micro-school model — combining both homeschooling and in-person instruction. This mindset is exactly what Covenant Journey Academy (CJA) offers.

In addition, the discussion on the Sunday School Choice podcast also highlighted Education Savings Accounts as valuable tools for helping families who want an academic alternative for their children and are seeking private education options. CJA applauds the fact that Richey views school choice as both a ministry opportunity and a way for churches to reclaim their historical role as champions of education, helping families access options aligned with their values while blessing broader communities.

Overall, Richey explains, “It is a good thing to consider and to pray about engaging this topic of education choice, education freedom.” As public school systems in many states nationwide fail and falter — with students suffering the consequences — CJA stands as a beacon for families in need of something far better.

“The education choice movement will change the course of history. Parents are entrusted with the education of their children, and they need choices that fit their spiritual, emotional, physical, and economic needs,” says CJA Founder and Chancellor Mat Staver. “Empowering parents by providing school choice is the best thing we can do for the family.”

Covenant Journey Academy offers 300 self-paced online course options enabling homeschool families and micro-schools to easily offer a rich variety of Christ-centered courses. With 24/7/365 access to courses, parents are given great flexibility and can benefit from more creative approaches rather than rigid institutional structures. Parents enjoy the support of Christ-following, certified teachers in every class, and curriculum focuses on building strong foundational skills for reading, writing, mathematics, and much more.

CJA is honored to provide an affordable, superior learning experience for families — one built upon the foundation of a Christian worldview. Free consultations are available. Explore our academics, course offerings, leadership, and more by visiting CJ.Academy or calling 407-875-1967!
