New Study Shows Homeschooling Surging
ORLANDO, FL — Recent research from the Johns Hopkins School of Education shows homeschooling is on the rise nationwide.
From Washington to Maine, Georgia to Minnesota, at least 19 states report increases in homeschooling over 2023-24. The growth, Johns Hopkins reports, was “not driven by the pandemic or a sudden disruption to traditional schooling” — a fact made even more interesting given the current state of public schools in America.
According to the report, the data reveals two primary trends in different states: “continued growth, meaning that there was no post-pandemic decline” and “rebounding” growth, “meaning that there was a post-pandemic decline, in some cases several years of a decline, and then, in 2023-2024, the number of homeschoolers increased again.”
The Johns Hopkins conclusion: The phenomenon of surging homeschool growth cannot be explained by COVID-19. “Something else is driving this growth.” The report additionally emphasized that the substantial increase in homeschooling rates is even more dramatic in light of declining overall enrollment. In other words, “The number of homeschooled students is going up as the total number of U.S. students is going down.”
While the Johns Hopkins study stops short of assigning reasons for the historic move toward homeschooling, the exodus from public schools has taken place against a backdrop of historic parent-driven criticisms of the government school system. In recent years, parents across the nation have told their stories and vocally expressed their concerns that liberal teachers, elitist administrators, radical school boards, and leftist government leaders are pushing to indoctrinate children — from the earliest grades — with gender-identity politics, Critical Race Theory (CRT), and other elements of a woke agenda.
Covenant Journey Academy’s conclusion? Parents now have much better alternatives, and homeschooling has given them the ability to educate their children as they see fit. And with technological innovations and the rise of online education, parents are discovering that educating their children in the safety of their homes and communities is easier than it’s ever been.
“Online education is the wave of the future” said CJA’s Founder and Chancellor Mat Staver. “It’s empowering parents to break the monopoly of the broken government school system and give their children something better. More and more families are discovering that homeschooling has leveled the playing field. Increasingly, parents are stepping up to homeschool their children and equip them with the skills, knowledge, and discernment that allow them to live capable lives.
“CJA is dedicated to not only being a resource for parents but also equipping them where they are so that the homeschooling journey is a success for the whole family,” added Shawn Akers, CJA’s President and CEO.
